Durham Rock and Shop Market

Tomorrow is one of my favorite days of the year: Durham Rock and Shop Day! I’ve only been once but it left a lasting impression. Think about walking into a room filled with all your favorite stuff and the artists/designers who made it. That’s what Rock and Shop is! It’s an Etsy-lover’s dream come true. Not that I needed another reason to fall in love with Durham, but Rock and Shop seals the deal.

First up, Jordan Grace Owens. I’ve regretted not buying this poster for the past year.  I can’t wait to pick one up tomorrow. She handprints each one to give a personalized look. Beyond posters, she also sells the cutest paper dolls and illustrations that are A.D.O.R.A.B.L.E.

Next, This Paper Ship. This Paper Ship is composed of a talented couple in Saxapahaw, NC who specialize in lettering and design. They’re the geniuses behind the design of Yellow Dog Bread Co. in Raleigh. (If you haven’t been there, btw, go. NOW!) I’m looking forward to checking out prints and letterpress items from this shop!

And up last, Near Modern Disaster. Last year, the designer, Samantha, behind Near Modern Disaster and I had a detailed conversation about lilac jeans. The verdict: we’re both fans. I’m also a fan of hilarity of this shop! I bought a friend this card for a friend and I still can’t stop raving about it. I also bought this print for myself. I think the cards below will be my next purchase. Because I can’t resist deer or bowties, especially when they’re put together. Check out this shop for cards, illustrations, and general radness.

If you’d like to know more about who will be at the Rock and Shop Market,  check out their website or Facebook page. I’ll be the one drooling over everything tomorrow, so keep an eye out for me.

Vinnie Louise

Vinnie Louise Favorites

My favorites from Vinnie Louise

I’m so excited about the new shop opening today by my friend and lady crush, Ginny! She’s wonderfully adventurous and her latest adventure is Vinnie Louise. Her style is like nothing I’ve seen before, in the best way. If you haven’t checked out Vinnie Louise yet, pop over there now and check out the shop before it all sells out.

My favorites are the Aztec Cardigan (which sold out while I was typing this, booo!), the Pyrite & Bar necklace and the Mindy Dress. Every piece in the shop is handpicked by Ginny and is less than $52. Pretty incredible, if you ask me!

Congrats, Ginny! Vinnie Louise is perfect.

You Are Good at Things: A Checklist

The perfect Monday pick-me-up is a book that lists things you’re (probably) very good at doing. I spent 20 minutes flipping through You Are Good at Things: A Checklist earlier today and can’t quit thinking about all the underappreciated things I can do!

Image

I’d like to add bargain hunting, Netflix binging, drinking iced coffee and daydreaming to the list. I’m definitely a pro at all those! Give yourself some credit, you’re good at a lot of things. You can buy this book online, or if you’re in Durham/Raleigh, Parker and Otis has a few in stock!

10 Reasons to Love Jason Segel

Image

|Image|

I’m full of irrational fears but lately my biggest one has been never finding a man as attractive as Jason Segel. Call it crazy but it’s the truth! The guy’s near perfection and here’s why:

1. Jason Segel can sing. Proof is here, here and here

2. He’s hilarious. Have you seen “How I Met Your Mother” or “Freaks and Geeks” or anything else he’s ever been in?

3. Jason Segel’s got good taste in women. Hello, Michelle Williams!

4. He’s got a work ethic that can’t be bothered. See page 4 in this interview with GQ from 2010.

5. He’s tall, like the 6’4″ kind of tall. Forgive me for being shallow but who doesn’t appreciate a little bit of height?

6. The dude is a writer, a successful one at that. He sold his first piece at just 21 years old! Incredible.

7. Jason Segel is unapologetically dedicated to things like Dracula musicals and the Muppets. I sort of love that about him!

8. He’s devilishly charming.

9. He takes dogs on walks and wears plaid!

10. He’s a good coworker. Just ask Alyson Hannigan, who cried at the thought of being without her tv husband

Tomorrow is the season finale of “How I Met Your Mother” and I’m anxious to see how it all ends. But mostly I’m sad about not seeing this guy every Monday night.

Am I the only one with the fear of never ending up with a hot celeb? Well, other than ever tweenager out there.

Overalls, 4 Years Later

Almost 4 years ago to the day, I wrote this post in the hopes that someday overalls would come back in style. Thank goodness my dreams finally came true! I’m thrilled to see overalls all around the blogosphere. The pair in the photo below I bought at Anthropologie last fall and then returned when I thought they made me look too much like a farmer’s daughter…which I am, by the way. When I saw this photo on The Refined Woman, I slapped my forehead Homer Simpson-style. Why did I ever return those?!

Just in case you’re in the market for a pair of overalls, Madewell and Free People have some great options.

Oliver Wallace Hayes: Boston Terrier Extraordinaire

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

I realized today that Oliver hasn’t made an appearance on the blog yet. So here he is, in all his Boston Terrier glory!

I adopted Oliver from Lake Norman Rescue Mission last June. He’s the first pet I’ve owned on my own and it’s definitely been a learning experience. Growing up on a farm, my family always had a dog who could play outside without a leash all day long if it wanted. Having a dog in the city is totally different! Oliver never leaves the house without a collar and a leash. Thankfully I currently have a fenced-in backyard where he can play but I never leave him out there unattended. Oliver’s also the first dog I’ve ever taken on a walk. In the past, my dog would follow me around on the farm unleashed but Oliver loves to lead the way when we leave the house.

I know all dogs have personalities but Oliver has the strongest personality of any dog I’ve previously owned. He’s got more energy than the average toddler and even with multiple walks and playtimes outside, he still paces the house nonstop. In the morning, I have to be perfectly still until I’m committed to getting out of bed. Once Oliver sees my eyes open, he goes berserk. It’s the best alarm clock! On the other hand, he takes his sleep very seriously and is quite a dreamer. His little legs run often like he’s chasing something and occasionally he’ll let out a muffled bark. It’s adorable.

Another fun fact is that Oliver loves to wear sweaters. I’m not kidding. When he sees me pull out a sweater, he goes nuts. Even if it’s a sweater for me to wear! This winter has been particularly crucial, so he’s gotten a lot of use out of his small wardrobe.

I couldn’t be more thankful to have him around! He makes things much more exciting.

Makeup + Routines

Abby has long been a friend of mine and her writing never ceases to amaze. Today on her blog, she shared her opinions on makeup and it was thrilling to see her routine and beauty favorites. It reminded me of a friend last week who said anytime she has guests staying with her, she likes to secretly try their shampoo. So Abby, thanks for letting me metaphorically try your shampoo.

Much like Abby, I’m willing to splurge on a good moisturizer but eye makeup is where a  drugstore find comes in handy. Or at least, it used to be. Now I’m always tempted to buy Benefit’s They’re Real mascara. It’s amazing and doesn’t flake off. In fact, it usually takes nothing short of a small makeup-removing-cotton-ball army to properly rid my lashes of it.

Some of my other favorites include Nars blush in Orgasm (embarrassing name, beautiful hue), Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Natural Lipstick in N9 Copper Pink, Klorane dry shampoo, and Snow Drop Hand Cream in Winter Vanilla. At the top of my list are these $7 tinted lip balms from Burt’s Bees. They pack a lot of hydration with the perfect amount of sheer color.

P.S. I’m totally loving the Vanity Project series on Bleubird right now, pairing illustration and beauty routines.
